Lancaster, N.Y. (WBEN) - A man on Puerto Rico's Most Wanted List was arrested during a traffic stop in Lancaster on Thursday.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, on June 5, U.S. Border Patrol agents responded to a report of possible undocumented migrants in a neighborhood. With assistance from the Lancaster Police Department, agents located a vehicle with a passenger matching the description and conducted a traffic stop.
The suspect, later identified as 54-year-old Raymundo Rondon-Canales, a U.S. citizen from Puerto Rico, gave agents a false name and presented them with a lawful permanent resident card that didn't match the name provided.
Further investigation led agents to discover Rondon-Canales was wanted in Puerto Rico, and was listed on their Most Wanted List. Rondon-Canales, a convicted felon sex offender, had absconded from Puerto Rico, violating his court order from Guayama Court.
"This arrest underscores our unwavering commitment to border security and apprehending dangerous fugitives", stated Buffalo Station Patrol Agent in Charge Martin Coombs. "The individual in custody, a convicted sex offender on Puerto Rico’s most wanted listed, posed a significant threat to public safety."
Border Patrol agents processed Rondon-Canales and turned him over to the Erie County Sheriff's Office, where he is awaiting extradition to Puerto Rico.
