Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A Buffalo man will serve the next two decades in prison for stabbing three employees at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center nearly two years ago.
36-year-old Calvin Haskins was sentenced Thursday morning to a determinate sentence of 20 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision after he intentionally stabbed the employees on April 3, 2024 inside a housing unit for outpatient residents.
Haskins attempted to cause the death of the victim, a male employee, by stabbing him multiple times with a knife. He stabbed a second victim, a female employee, as she attempted to intervene during the attack. Haskins also attempted to cause the death of a third victim, another male employee who attempted to intervene, by stabbing him multiple times.
Responding Buffalo police officers were able to take Haskins into custody.
All three victims were taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where they received treatment for various injuries. Both male victims, who suffered serious physical injuries, were hospitalized for several days.
None of the employees have returned to work, suffering from lasting impacts from their injuries.
"These three employees of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center were working to help and rehabilitate this defendant when he repeatedly stabbed them with a knife that he had hidden in his sock. The victims continue to recover from life-altering physical injuries and remain traumatized by this violent attack," said Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane in a statement. "I hope that this defendant being convicted and sentenced to significant term of incarceration helps them continue to heal from this horrific crime."
Haskins pleaded guilty to two counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (Class "B" violent felonies) and one count of Assault in the Second Degree (Class "D" violent felony). He entered a guilty plea to the highest counts in the indictment in November 2025.
Final orders of protection were issued on behalf of the three victims and three witnesses on Thursday.
