Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Erie County First Deputy District Attorney Michael Keane received the unanimous endorsement of Erie County Democrats on Tuesday as the party's 2024 District Attorney Candidate.
Keane has been in office since 2017, working with current District Attorney John Flynn. As First Deputy DA, Keane took the lead on many homicide cases, including the May 14 shooting at the Tops on Jefferson Avenue.
The endorsement of Keane comes a week after DA Flynn told WBEN he will not run for re-election.
"The District Attorney's job demands the experience and expertise to handle the worst crimes that come before the courts," said Democratic Chairman Jeremy Zellner in a statement Tuesday night. "Mike Keane has the right vision to lead the DA's office into the future, and we are proud to endorse and stand with him."
While in office Keane played a role in establishing Buffalo's Opioid Intervention Court, the first of its kind in the US.
Keane had to fend off a challenge from former prosecutor Chris Belling for the party's endorsement.
Keane is a graduate of UB School of Law.
