Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - Dozens of migrants, including children, were left standing outside in the cold on Wednesday while their placement information was being sorted out.
This happened at the Motel 6 on Maple Road near Sweet Home in Amherst.
Liz Garcia, Deputy Press Secretary for NYC Mayor Eric Adams, tells WBEN it happened because of what she calls a 'miscommunication' between DocGo and Jewish Family Services. DocGo had been providing housing services for migrants locally, but was working with the city and Jewish Family Services for months to transition the migrants to alternative housing.
Garcia sent us this statement, "The safety and security of everyone in our care is always a top priority. While it took a matter of hours, our contractors did successfully transport families from the Quality Inn to their new temporary placement at the Motel 6 as they await permanent housing. We are proud of our resettlement efforts upstate and will continue to work with our partners to ensure that no family is forced to sleep on the street."
"Jewish Family Services was made aware DocGo was going to be ending its services at the original hotel the migrants were being housed at weeks ago," said one representative with DocGo with WBEN.
Garcia tells us, some of the migrants have now been moved to permanent placements or they are staying with family or friends.
