HAMBURG, N.Y. (WBEN).......A decision by the Ford Motor Co. to shift some production work on its trucks and Lincoln brands from China to the United States could have a positive ripple effect at the Hamburg Stamping Plant.
Ford, on Aug. 12, said by 2030 production of parts of its Lincoln Navigator and Aviator lines along with its F-150 and Super Duty trucks will come back to the U.S.
So how does that impact the Hamburg plant where nearly 1,000 full and part time UAW Local 897 workers are employed?
The plant produces side panels, doors and hoods for the Lincolns and two truck lines - much of which goes to Ford's Louisville production center where Lincolns and trucks are made.
Early indications hint that by shifting work from China back to the U.S. may lead to more jobs and a possible expansion of the Hamburg Stamping Plant.
"We'd love to see it," said Denise Abbott, Western New York Area Labor Federation AFL-CIO president.
The plant opened in 1950 and, through various expansions now has more than 2.4 million square feet nestled along Route 5.
More than 100 rail cars, daily, move processed items from the plant to other Ford locations - most notably the Louisville facility and one in Oakville, Ont.
Ford, last year, produces more than 2 million vehicles at its various U.S. plants.
"Remember, these are high-paying, highly skilled jobs," Abbott said. "Who wouldn't want to see more manufacturing jobs come back to the area."
