BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) There's no way around it. Buffalo is known for snow. To have a little fun and take the edge off of an impending lake effect storm, Erie County officials are launching a "Name a Plow" contest.
"We're trying to get some kids, even adults, to come up with some good names," said William Geary on WBEN Wednesday. The Department of Public Works Commissioner for Erie County added, "these are county-owned pieces of equipment that every taxpayer in Erie County pays for."
The idea to name plows came from Scandinavia and Minnesota, where they are no strangers to winter weather.
During a storm briefing Tuesday, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz stood in front of a plow at the Harlem Road Highway Department saying, "we have a great fleet of snow busters and drift busters and we want to put names on the side of them."
Erie County has a fleet of about 45 plows.
You have until Nov. 30 to make a submission online.
Help us name our fleet with DPW's "Name a Plow" contest. We have already received over 900 submissions in less than 24 hours! Submissions will be open until 11/30, public voting will begin on 12/1.

Submissions will be reviewed and presented to the public for voting December 1 – 14. The names with the most votes will be announced the week of December 19.
Winning names will be assigned to a plow and featured on the truck for the season. Winners will also have the opportunity for a photo-op with the newly named Erie County Snow Plow.
As for favorite names, Bill Geary told us, when he was coming up through the ranks, they always had a truck that is still in the fleet, they the workers named The Grinch. It was a standard shift truck. It's always been my favorite."
To get an idea of the interest the contest is generating, we thought we would share some names that are being submitted by Jeremy White from our sister station WGR Sportsradio 550.
