Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed on Tuesday a pair of tornados to touch down across the Western New York region on Monday.

The first tornado to touch down Monday was on Grand Island just after 4:30 p.m. ET, while the second tornado touched down Monday night in the Town of Pembroke.

According to NWS meteorologist Jim Mitchell, an EF-0 tornadic waterspout came on land near West River Road and Third Avenue on Grand Island during the afternoon rush hour.

"We ended up getting a weak Ef-0 tornado on the ground for about a mile or so, top winds, 85 miles per hour," said Mitchell with WBEN on Tuesday.

Mitchell says no one was hurt as a result of the tornado, while the damage from the storm was kept to just trees and limbs.

Despite a tornado warning from Environment Canada on the other side of the border, Mitchell says while on radar, meteorologists did not see any rotation right at ground level.

"We did have a severe thunderstorm warning on the storm, and inside the warning, we had a tornado possible tag, just because of the rotation we saw on the radar," Mitchell added.

As for the tornado in Pembroke, Mitchell says that tornado touched down right along Route 77 near the Hamlet of Indian Falls just after 8:30 p.m. ET.

"It looks like it produced damage at about three residences along the road there," Mitchell said.

Peak wind speeds with this tornado were estimated at 75 mph. Mitchell adds this tornado was the result of the main system coming through the region that had produced the earlier tornado in Grand Island.

"It was only on the ground for about two minutes, very minor damage to rotted trees," Mitchell noted.

With these confirmed tornados on Tuesday, a new record of 31 tornados have now been recorded this season in New York State.
