North Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - North Tonawanda residents got a rude awakening Monday when they saw their Halloween decorations knocked over. Police are trying to find out who was responsible.
Kim LaRussa lives in a neighborhood struck by vandals.
"It woke up my husband on the camera at about midnight, and he immediately went outside and saw that our giant werewolf animatronic was knocked down. We have a horror Butler on our porch that was knocked down, and so he noticed the damage right away," said LaRussa in an interview with WBEN.
This was the third time the werewolf was knocked down, and LaRussa initially thought winds may have been responsible.
"But now it might have been these individuals, because it was three times, separate occasions where this was happening, which prompted us to put up the camera," LaRussa said.
She adds the camera caught the suspect in the act.
North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec says LaRussa is not alone.
"I saw a couple videos too, where people are knocking over skeletons or just breaking different Halloween items," said Tylec with WBEN.
He adds some dirt bikers went on to the city's golf course as well.
"Now we're dealing with some repairs on the greens over there too, which is very frustrating for our parks department or golf employees as well," Tylec said.
Tylec calls these acts of vandalism disheartening.
"I don't really understand why individuals feel it's a fun thing to destroy people's property. Not just public, but private [property], especially," he said. "For those out there, you never know who it is. It might be someone you know, might be someone in your house."
