NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WBEN) — Good news for those who want to use marijuana without leaving home.
The Office of Cannabis Management announced guidelines for legal cannabis delivery on Friday as the first wave of retail license holders work toward opening dispensaries.
Conditional Adult Use Retail Dispensary license holders will be able to seek approval from the Cannabis Control Board to make deliveries.
The option to deliver could help dispensaries in New York City compete with black market dealers, many of whom deliver as a matter of course.
If a licensed dispensary secures permission, it will be allowed to use a warehouse to fulfill delivery orders while building permanent dispensary locations for up to a year.
The first wave of approvals has already been issued. That means cannabis delivery sales could come soon, though it’s unclear how long approval for delivery will take.
Customers will be able to place orders online or over the phone, but won’t be able to shop in person at warehouses.
Customers will need to pay remotely. No one will be able to pay delivery workers with cash.
The delivery drivers can use cars, bikes, scooters or other vehicles to make the drop.
Similar to alcohol delivery, consumers will have to provide ID verification at both the point of sale and delivery.
These guidelines come after the Cannabis Control Board gave preliminary approval to 36 dispensaries in November.
The OCM maintains the first in-person sales will be made before the end of the year, though the exact date is not yet clear.
