Youngstown, NY (WBEN) Last week's announcement by President Trump to rename Lake Ontario Lake America as the trade war continues between the US and Canada will have little effect on one historical center, according to its executive director.
"t's not being handled at all. We're a historic site," says Executive Director Robert Emerson. "The lake has been named Lake Ontario for over 350 years, and we deal with the past here, so we're not making any changes at this time."
This wouldn't be the first name change for the lake. "Back in the 17th century, it was called Lake St. Louis. It was called Lake Frontenac. It was called Lake Kataraki. But seems like about the middle of the 17th century that started. They started calling it Lake Ontario, and throughout the time period that we deal with, it's been known that way," says Emerson, who again says no changes are going to be made.
Emerson says there are many Lake Ontario references on the site already. "At our site the name Lake Ontario would appear on exhibit signage. It appears in literature that we have published. It appears in brochures, and all of those things are in hand. And you know we're not we're not at the point where we have to reprint any of those things, so we're going to be using current stock for a long time," explains Emerson.
He says time will tell if this will mean a new chapter in one Great Laie's history.
