Opening day for the Buffalo Bisons pitches the Buffalo-Niagara region with unseasonably colder air in the forecast for the opening game downtown.

Much drier air will eventually overspread the eastern Great Lakes today, with clouds giving way to sunshine from north to south through the day, National Weather Service forecasters say. A much colder airmass moving into the region, will lead to Friday highs only in the lower 30's in most areas. These highs are close to 15 degrees below average for late March.

"Much, much cooler," 7 News meteorologist Aaron Mentkowski tells WBEN. "We’re near 30 now and that’s where we’re going to stay."

If you're among those who will brave the cold for the opening game for the Bisons Friday afternoon, Mentkowski has some advice. "Put on the Bisons winter hats and go enjoy some baseball."

Cloudy conditions move in over night into Saturday with very cold conditions. It will be a cold night, with lows in the lower 20's for lower elevations and teens for the SouthernTier.

Cold temperatures will continue into the day on Saturday with well below normal temperatures for Saturday afternoon in the low to mid 30's for most areas, with some mid to upper 20's for the higher terrain and the potential for some nuisance lake effect snow as well.

Some moderating air will begin to move into the region later in the day on Saturday, allowing overnight lows Saturday night to moderate some compared to Friday night lows. Temperatures will start to warm above normal Sunday into the new work week.

Sunday's high temperature is around 50, with Monday nearing 60 and well into the 60's for Tuesday.
