(AccuWeather/WBEN) Western New York is bracing for another round of oppressive heat and humidity, with hot conditions expected to linger for several days and “feel like” temperatures climbing even higher.
Heat-related alerts are posted for all Western New York. The combination of high temperatures and humidity will make conditions dangerous for prolonged outdoor exposure. Heat index values can reach levels that can cause heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
EXTREME HEAT WARNING for Niagara, Orleans, Genesee Counties from Noon Wednesday until 8:00 p.m. Friday.
HEAT ADVISORY is in effect for all of Western New York until 8:00 p.m. Friday.
Heat index values in the 98 to 104 range each afternoon. Very warm and muggy temperatures overnight will not provide much relief.
Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat related illnesses to occur. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
