Orchard Park, N.Y. (WBEN) - Fresh off Tuesday's GOP primary win for Orchard Park Supervisor, Town Councilman Joe Liberti said three things resonated with voters.
"They want transparent leadership, smart growth and a town that listens to people," Liberti told WBEN on Friday.
Liberti beat incumbent Eugene Majchrzak with 77% of the vote to advance to the November election as the Republican nominee.
One of the top issues in the town is development around the new Bills stadium.
"You're talking about a $2.2 billion project. We are blessed to have this in our town, and today it's underutilized," Liberti said. "We want to make it more attractive for families to enjoy."
The stadium zone is going to be a delicate balance for town leaders.
"A lot of residents want responsible, smart growth. They want restaurants and boutique shops, but they also want green space." Liberti said. "We're listening to all of the residents."
Liberti confirmed that there may be two new hotels coming to the stadium area.
Over the past couple of months, the town has been gathering public input on a conceptual master plan for the stadium area. They are working with a consulting team from Labella Associates. Liberti says the town has had to make a lot of tweaks to the original plan.
The Town of Hamburg is also in the process of revitalizing areas near the stadium for mixed use development. Is it a competition between the two towns?
"No, I wouldn't call it that," Liberti said. "We created a committee and we invited Hamburg and Erie County to join us on a monthly basis. We don't want it to be us-versus-them. We don't want six-story hotels in Hamburg and two-story hotels in Orchard Park. We want it to be uniform. If we're going with a four-story hotel, then we want it to be four stories in Orchard Park and four stories in Hamburg."
