Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The pandemic has changed the way businesses around the world get things done. Heintz and Weber is no exception, and its president says he's had to slow down supply of Weber's mustard for the time being.
Steven Desmond says businesses around the world have dealt with the slowdown of sustainable employees nationwide. Desmond says same for his business. "Most people think we're this huge company, but we have a staff of six people. When you're operating your company on three and a half, it puts a damper on the pace of the business and the structure," explains Desmond.
He's also faced delays in the supplies needed to make and bottle the mustard. "The lead time for base products, base ware has gone from three months to six months to eight months for caps, glass, plastic, and now mustard," explains Desmond. He says the ingredients are made by outside companies under the founder's guidelines, and he was told of that lead time shift in mid-June, in the heart of mustard season.
Desmond says he's had to cut back some production on minor products. "But this is the first time we've run into a problem with our 16 ounce and 6 ounce sizes, which are 85 percent of our business," says Desmond. He says that's forced him to slow down production and supply. Desmond cites one example of an order of 30 cases, but could only provide seven. But he received good news Wednesday: he received 42,000 pounds of mustard, and things should be back in order in a couple of weeks.
Desmond says he's changed his ordering structure so he's put his next order for base mustard for August a month earlier to keep the mustard flowing.
Desmond says the bright side is he gets to do a lot of the delivery and greet many of his clients.
