Parent forum gathers survey data on BPS

"It was absolutely unreal the capacity of harm that's taking place in the school setting, and the parents aren't being notified"

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) A parent forum was held Thursday after last weekend's podcast "The Unsubscribe" aired allegations of a coverup of abuse in Buffalo Public Schools. One parent issued a survey to go over what needs to be done to alleviate the situation.

"We invited the community out to give them a choice and a voice of what they want the school district to do. In regards to the allegations that came from this podcast," says Kareema Morris of Bury the Violence. Morris says she created a survey and collected data. She says the information received was broken up into 26 categories. "We are going to submit that information to the Office of Child and Family Services and Office of Mental Health New York State," says Morris.

She says the capacity of harm and the lack of parental notification is "unreal" to her. "My primary concern was, what's happening to the children? Are their needs being me socially and emotionally, they just go back to school like nothing happened. And that's problematic, because they continue to believe that these things are going to be normal, normalized, if we keep acting like it's not happening," Morris claims. "The allegations have been made more real, just hearing some of the parents responses about it was a robocall made home that day with minimal information. The fact that the children are talking about it once it was brought up, it carries weight in my mind about how this is allowed to happen and who's who's responsible for them, the Buffalo Public school district to actually respond now."

Morris says she has reached out to several other school districts as well. "if we have to create a law or some type of legislation behind this to make sure that this never happens again, that's our primary focus," adds Morris.
