West Seneca, N.Y. (WBEN) - A driver, who West Seneca police say sped off from a traffic stop, is dead after a crash Tuesday night.
At around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, officials say a West Seneca police officer initiated a traffic stop of a pickup truck in the area of 650 Harlem Road. Police say the driver of the pickup truck fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed, traveling approximately a half-mile Southbound on Harlem Road before crashing.
The officer attempted to pursue the vehicle, and as the officer crested the Harlem Road overpass at Indian Church Road, he observed the pickup truck had struck a vehicle traveling Northbound on Harlem Road. The pickup truck came to rest, overturned on its roof South of the impact site and, at some point, caught fire.
Officers at the scene were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity is being withheld at this time.
Three occupants of the other vehicle involved were transported to Erie County Medical Center with varying injuries.
The New York State Attorney General's Office was immediately notified, and will be conducting an independent investigation pursuant to the Executive Law.
