Ellicott, N.Y. (WBEN) - A private plane made an emergency landing and crashed on the runway of the Jamestown Airport on Monday in the Town of Ellicott, just North of the City of Jamestown. The crash had closed the airport for a significant period of time.
The crashed took place at around 10:12 a.m. ET, and emergency services were immediately called to respond by those working at the airport. Officials believe the plane lost all electronics onboard, prompting the quick and swift respond from emergency personnel.
According to officials, the plan landed just short of the runway, but continued on a straight trajectory onto the runway before coming to a stop just off the side of the runway.
Shortly after the emergency landing, the plane burst into flames, where thick, black smoke was seen a ways outside the airport.
Just two people were onboard the Cessna 750 Citation X that crashed on the main runway, with both men escaping before the fire engulfed the plane. The pilot was airlifted to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, while his co-pilot was transported to UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown.
According to officials, both passengers onboard the plane were flying from Dunkirk to Jamestown before embarking on a flight to Florida.
A number of local fire departments and other area first responders arrived to the scene shortly after the crash, including a STAT MedEvac helicopter.
The NTSB and FAA are both joining the investigation into Monday's crash.
