Niagara Falls, N.Y. (WBEN) - Niagara Parks Police rescued a 5-year-old boy from the Niagara Gorge Monday afternoon after a mother jumped with her son at around 1 p.m. on Goat Island.
Firefighters along with state park police say two people climbed over a railing and fell from the edge. With members from the Parks Police, fire crews made their way down to search. They encountered slippery, rocky terrain and found a mother and child approximately 70 yards from the top.
Once they were able to get to the victims, medical evaluation and rescue attempts were started. The five-year-old child was brought to the top and handed to Mercy Flight and taken to a nearby hospital.
After lengthy CPR was administered to the mother, firefighters say she died at the scene.
The incident happened between Terrapin Point and Cave of the Winds and a full investigation is underway.
