Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz posted on social media Friday his opposition to the notion of term limits for county officials. This comes as one legislator proposed a bill to require term limits.

"I have always opposed the concept of term limits, because we already have the purest form of determining our leaders: elections," said Poloncarz in a post on Facebook.

Poloncarz adds a term limit law is not good government, rather calling it a cop out.

"It is lazy government shirking its primary responsibility of creating a better community for all," Poloncarz posted.

Erie County Legislator John Bargnesi calls Poloncarz's social media post on the matter disappointing.

"I was not sure why he made a comment prior to even coming on the floor for a vote. That is the next step," said Bargnesi in an interview with WBEN.

Bargnesi says the legislature has to approve the bill before it goes to the county executive's desk.

Bargnesi disputes Poloncarz's notion a term limit law is laziness on the part of government.

"We are trying to pass this to present it to the voters of this county. It's their decision, it's not our decision," Bargnesi said. "I don't know what laziness has to do with it, because it's been quite a bit of work to get it this far."

If lawmakers approve the bill, it then goes to Poloncarz for his signature.

"If he chooses not to sign it, we'll deal with it at that time about a veto and override," Bargnesi noted.
