Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Following a lengthy meeting involving Canadian officials Tuesday, it's expected Canada Wednesday will announce advising against non-essential international travel as a way to control the spread of the Omicron variant.
CTV is reporting the development which is similar in nature to steps Canada took in March 2020 at the start of the COVID pandemic.
The advisory would come not long after border policies were eased to allow fully vaccinated Canadians and permanent residents to pass through the border without providing a negative pcr COVID test.
CTV reports it's likely testing will be required for all returning to Canada at airports, regardless of nationality.
The report cites Chief Public Health Office Dr. Theresa Tam as stating that community spread of the new variant has already started and that Omicron cases "could rapidly escalate in the days to come."
