Buffalo, NY (WBEN) This weekend marks the Ride for Roswell, as bicyclists raise funds for Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. This year's torch lighter knows what it's like to battle cancer.
"I'm humbled and excited, I'm so honored to be representing the ride for Roswell in front of everybody at the Celebration of Hope (tonight)," says Eve Holberg, chosen to light the torch. "I'm riding in the Peloton from the main hospital out to UB and accompanying ride founder Mitch Flynn, who will have the flame with him, and then we'll use that to light the torch and kick off the really exciting part of the ride weekend after the Celebration of Hope and the procession, the actual ride on Saturday morning."
Holberg is a three time cancer survivor. "I had rectal cancer 17 years ago, and I've had lung cancer twice, and my husband also had rectal cancer 10 years before I did. And what are the odds that two people from completely different backgrounds would suffer the same cancer, you know, 10 years apart,," says Holberg. Doug Sherman would then be diagnosed with bile duct cancer and died in December 2024. This will be Holberg's 16th ride. "it's just really brought it into focus, how important it is that we all get together to fight cancer and raise money for research and patient care at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center," says Holberg.
This will be Holberg's 16th ride. The goal is to raise $6.6 million.
