Neither team was able to score in the first period, while both teams also remained clean by staying out of the penalty box. Ottawa was credited with 12 shots on goal, and Buffalo recorded 10 shots against Senators goalie Samuel Ersson.
Sabres goalie Colten Ellis stopped all 12 Senators shots on goal, including an important save less than two minutes into the game.

The first penalty of the night was called just over six minutes into the second period, as Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin was called for holding. Despite Ottawa having a couple of shots on goal during the man advantage, they were unable to capitalize on the chance.
The game's first goal came with six minutes remaining in the second period after Zach Benson and Peyton Krebs hustled to keep a puck in the offensive zone. It was Tage Thompson taking a shot from the high slot that was deflected by Krebs and into the net for a 1-0 Buffalo lead.

The goal was Krebs' first tally of the season.
Ottawa was able to tie the game midway through the third period, thanks to a fortunate bounce that landed on Philip Tomasino's stick. After his initial shot was stopped by Ellis, forward Shane Pinto was alone to slide the puck into an open net and even the game at 1-1.
Pinto's sixth goal of the year was assisted by Tomasino and Thomas Chabot.
Michael Amadio gave the Senators their first lead of the game when he was able to convert on a one-timer from the left-wing side and his fifth goal of the season. Tim Stutzle made the cross-ice pass that helped set up the go-ahead goal with just about three minutes remaining in regulation. Fabian Zetterlund was also credited with an assist.
The Sabres recorded 25 shots on goal in the loss, and did not score on either of their two power play chances in the third period. They were able to successfully kill off both of Ottawa's power play chances, as well.
Ellis made 28 saves despite the loss.
