Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Buffalo Sabres have earned a title as of late. Not the Atlantic Division Championship, at least not yet, but a wagon. The team now looking at a way to capitalize on that, and it's visible outside KeyBank Center.
Cara Murphy, Sabres VP of Marketing says it's the result of a brainstorm to take advantage of the Sabres being called a wagon on social media. "They're a wagon, which means, essentially that they're rolling," says Murphy. "They're, a dominant team, and with the stretch we've had in the games we've played, the Sabres certainly are in the way they're performing, so I think it's just kind of fun."
Murphy says there were a couple of options in getting that wagon. "The option was allowing me, instead of manufacturing or putting together a design of one, we actually want to see if we can source a real wagon. So they went out, and I'll be honest, they found it through Facebook marketplace," says Murphy. "I believe it was so that transaction happened and and we commissioned a vendor, just to, refurbish an old wagon, and, paint a logo on it and make sure it was ready for a fan facing Plaza photo op."
The wagon was introduced the morning of the Sabres' first game since clinching a playoff spot, Monday vs. Tampa Bay. "We want this thing to be out to celebrate that moment for fans to see. And it will be out for, obviously, the duration of the playoffs and our run, and hopefully a long run. So we'll have it out there for fans to enjoy throughout the playoff stretch," says Murphy.
She says it's been a galvanizing point for Sabres fans. "It's been great before the Tampa game, and after the Tampa game, especially when we had a lot of fans down here, especially after that win, we saw a lot of people stopping for a photo and and we brought it out again. It's in the plaza, so we hope it becomes kind of a staple for the plaza and for people to stop by and get pictures with their family and friends and be able to share that," says Murphy.
The Sabres wrap up the regular season at home Wednesday vs. Dallas.
