Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon has delivered a formal letter to City Comptroller Barbara Miller-Williams regarding alleged inaction on issuing bonds for the adopted $110 million 2025 Capital Budget.
In the letter, Scanlon reiterates that the Buffalo Common Council approved the Capital Budget this past December, and emphasizes that eight months later, no projects have commenced due to the Comptroller’s failure to act.
The Mayor further states this delay has cost the City of Buffalo the 2025 construction season, jeopardized hundreds of millions in federal funding, and raised concerns among state and federal partners about the city’s ability to deploy resources.
Mayor Scanlon’s letter gives the Comptroller until Aug. 29 to issue all bonds associated with the adopted 2025 Capital Budget or face legal action.
In a response last week to Mayor Scanlon, Miller-Williams said her obligation is "to the taxpayers and citizens to safeguard the city’s long-term fiscal health."
"I remain open to working with the Administration and BPS [Buffalo Public Schools] if they choose to bring forward a Capital Budget request that does not exceed $28 million debt cap and complies with the standards we are legally and fiscally bound to uphold," she added.
