Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Mayor-elect Sean Ryan says he plans to appoint Craig Macy as Interim Commissioner of the Buffalo Police Department, as the Ryan transition team continues its national search for a permanent commissioner.
"I am grateful for Craig Macy’s willingness to step into this role," Ryan said in a statement on Thursday. "He is widely respected in the department, and has demonstrated consistent, results-driven service to this city. His leadership will ensure stability and professionalism at the Buffalo Police Department while we complete our nationwide search."
Macy retired from the Buffalo Police Department in September after more than 17 years of service. As Chief of Detectives, he oversaw a major reduction in Buffalo’s homicide rate, and achieved a 98% homicide clearance rate in 2024, his final full year in the role.
He previously served as a community police officer, SWAT team member, and lieutenant of the Neighborhood Engagement Team, and earned recognition that included the Mayor’s Award of Merit and the Commissioner’s Medal of Commendation.
A retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Macy has also received numerous military honors, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and an Army Commendation Medal with Valor.
