Lake effect locks-in on southern tier as colder air and wind overtakes WNY weather

Winter Weather Advisory for southern Erie County

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The colder air has arrived, and with it is the threat of some significant lake effect snow accumulation across portions of extreme southern Erie County as well as Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties.

While the Buffalo metro area will see snow showers and some blowing snow at times, it will be the southern tier that takes the brunt of the lake snow.


Forecasters with the Buffalo office of the National Weather Service have posted a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Chautauqua County and Winter Weather Advisories are now posted for southern Erie and Cattaraugus Counties. continue.

After a couple inches of snow in the higher terrain across the southern tier overnight into Friday, a total of up to a foot of lake snow could accumulate across the much higher terrain of the extreme southern tier later Friday and into Saturday.

In addition to the much colder temperatures across the Western New York region beginning Friday, gusty winds of up to 30 to 40 mph will also make their presence known.

* WHAT...Lake effect snow. Snow accumulations of 5 to 9 inches in the most persistent lake snows. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
* WHERE...Cattaraugus and Southern Erie counties.
* WHEN...Until 7 AM EST Saturday.
* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. Travel could be difficult across the elevated terrain. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and especially evening commute.

LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST SATURDAY
* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 11 inches in the most persistent lake snows. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
* WHERE...Chautauqua county.
* WHEN...Until 7 AM EST Saturday.
* IMPACTS...Travel could be difficult. Areas of blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and especially evening commute.
