Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Police have released the names of the victim and suspect in an incident Friday night during which officers shot a suspect in a fatal shooting incident on Broadway at Sears.
Police say the incident occurred just before 7:20pm when Ferry-Fillmore officers were on routine patrol and pulled up on a male shot multiple times. The victim, 63-year old Atlas Johnson of Buffalo, was declared deceased at the scene.
The suspect involved in the fatal shooting, 27 year old Nakeem Haynes of Buffalo, then shot at officers at close range through the patrol vehicle windshield. Police say a foot pursuit ensued when officers shot the individual.
"The suspect sustained eight gunshot wounds. He is expected to survive those injuries," said Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia Sunday afternoon. The suspect was transported to ECMC where he was listed in critical but stable condition Sunday.
Gramaglia expressed frustration with the shooting violence he's seen in his short tenure as the new commissioner of the department. "In my 28 years of policing, I've never seen anything like(what's) been going on over the last several months where we've had a police officer shot at."
As is Department policy, Internal Affairs Division and homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
