Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A piglet's leap of faith from a transport truck on Grand Island may have saved her life.
Gina Lattuca, Communications Chief for the SPCA Serving Erie County, told WBEN about the tale of Willow, a 9-week-old piglet.
"The Thruway Authority brought her in. They saw her running around the I-190 and were finally able to catch her. She had an injured leg, likely from falling out of a truck," said Lattuca.
The pig had a meat tattoo, meaning she was probably destined for a livestock auction.
It occurred on July 24, which happens to be the same day as the Springville auction.
Lattuca suggested the plan may have been for the pig to be sold to be fattened up and ultimately sent to a slaughter house.
Willow apparently had other plans.
Her injuries were serious. Lattuca said it was touch and go for a few days. "Our farm manager, Heather, said she would walk into the farm and wonder if Willow was alive. Then a few days later, Heather walked in and Willow was in the stall, peeking out.
Willow has been spayed and she has already been placed with a pig farmer in Irving. "In a couple of weeks, once we know she's fully recovered," Lattuca said, "she'll be going to her new farm home to live out her wonderful life."
(This pig farmer does not make bacon!).
Gina called her a girl who wanted her life to go in a different direction.
