Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - City of Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon has declared a State of Emergency for the City of Buffalo, effective at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in response to the ongoing lake effect snow storm that is significantly impacting the city.

"My top priority is the safety of city residents," said Mayor Scanlon. "The city's emergency response team continues to actively monitor the storm and is working with our local and state agencies to respond effectively to this severe weather event."

City Hall is closing as of 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mayor Scanlon is urging all residents to stay indoors if possible and adhere to all emergency directives. The city will continue to provide updates as the storm progresses and residents are encouraged to stay informed through Mayor Scanlon's social media pages.

Earlier Tuesday, Scanlon announced because of worsening weather conditions, including blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility, Route 5 (Buffalo Skyway) was closed. Driver are to seek alternative routes and exercise caution while traveling.

Lake effect snow bands have drifted North toward Metro Buffalo and into the Northtowns on Tuesday. The band will eventually drift South once again before fizzling out Wednesday morning.
