Buffalo, NY (WBEN) State Police are joining Buffalo Police in a speed crackdown on the Kensington following a fatal crash blamed on racing.

Trooper James O'Callaghan says troopers from the Clarence barracks are helping BPD patrol the 33 day and night. He says results are already noticed. "This last weekend, just in about a day and a half, Buffalo Police Department and troopers issued over 100 speeding tickets, 140 total tickets a DWI, this is all on the 33 and both troopers, at least the troopers that were up there, said they were seeing speeds in the triple digits, obviously being extremely unsafe," says O'Callaghan.

O'Callaghan says the goal is simple. "We're hoping that this joint effort makes our roadway safer for you and your families. We don't want tragedies. We don't want to see people getting unnecessarily hurt because people driving and operating their vehicle very recklessly, going speeds that are way, way above the norm that should be driven on an everyday road. And that's why we're out there doing what we're doing," notes O'Callaghan.

He says the most crashes happen in the summer. "You would think it's the snowy weather, but it is not. Most of our collisions happen in the daylight on nicer weather situations. People have a false sense of security, thinking it's nice out so they can drive faster. More people are enough to get out of their houses and go go somewhere when the weather's nice. So more traffic on the roads. People have a false sense of security. They drive a little bit faster and and then obviously you get different vehicles out there, sports cars of people willing to drive quicker in different vehicles. And what we're seeing is an increase all along the board," O'Callaghan explains.

O'Callaghan says there's been illegal street racing in the city, including the Kensington. JohnLuc Jubert of Buffalo was pronounced dead at ECMC after his vehicle was rear-ended on the Kensington Expressway at Locust Street late Thursday night.
