Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) A vehicle and foot pursuit ends with a man's death.
City of Tonawanda Police say around 1am this morning, officers spotted a vehicle committing an infraction at Main and Niagara. Police say the driver stopped at Webster Street in North Tonawanda, then ran off. The pursuit ended when the driver jumped into the Erie Canal.
City of Tonawanda Police Department officers responded and threw a water rescue bag to the man. Officers began pulling him toward shore, but he lost consciousness. One officer entered the canal and brought him to shore. The 36 year old man was rushed to Kenmore Mercy Hospital where he later died.
Police say the man had warrants.
The DA's office and state AG's office have been notified, as is standard procedure.
