BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - A suspect is in custody after the Monday night shooting near the Ferry Grider Apartments that injured a 3-year-old boy, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said Wednesday.
Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo explained that the department is still in the early process of the investigation, but since the suspect has not yet been arraigned, he cannot provide any details relating to the identity of the suspect.
"The person we believe responsible is currently in custody," said Rinaldo. "I cannot get into specifics about the charges, who the person is or things of that nature. As we speak, this investigation is still ongoing and will be for quite some time, but again, a huge thank you to the community for responding to our request for assistance in this case.
"This was a three-year-old child who was shot in the head," Mayor Brown said. "When that happens, the response from the community is incredibly overwhelming. We need that kind of cooperation all the time from the community, and our community policing initiatives are geared toward building the community-police investigation."
Rinaldo noted that numerous people came forward to provide information and assist in the investigation.
The community gathered in an effort to push back against the significant rate of gun violence in the city, especially over 4th of July weekend, when 13 separate shooting incidents resulted in 21 victims.
Rinaldo expects the arraignment to come Thursday morning.
