Buffalo, NY (WBEN) New York State is giving homeowners qualified under the STAR program a tax break. A tax credit check will soon be mailed to homes across the Empire State. In some cases, the check may have already been received.
The homeowner tax rebate credit is a one-year program providing direct property tax relief to nearly 3 million eligible homeowners in 2022.
Esther Gulyas of EG Tax says it's just a refund of part of the school taxes. "It's over and above the star rebate," she explains. You must meet eligibility requirements. You must qualify for a 2022 STAR exemption, have an income of less than or equal to $250,000 for the 2020 income tax year, and a school tax liability for the 2022-2023 school year that is more than your 2022 STAR benefit.
Gulyas is thrilled to hear about the rebate. "It's a wonderful thing whenever New York taxpayers get a refund, hallelujah," says Gulyas. "But remember, this is a one time credit for this year, HTRC. And it's not going to be in the budget for next year."
Assemblymember Patrick Burke says this comes at a time when everyone needs help making ends meet. "I think we're doing everything we can to alleviate financial burdens for people," says Burke. He adds this is just one way where the state can put tax relief for people at the forefront of the priorities.
Burke estimates the highest checks will be around $1,000. He notes that will depend on income. "Everyone's struggling, it's not fun, right? Now, it's difficult for everyone. So anytime we can relieve costs in any way, whether it's through taxes, reducing energy costs, reducing food costs, anything we can do as a government to try and solve this problem, we need to do so this is important," says Burke.
The state will do everything automatically and you can expect the check to arrive by the end of the month.
