Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - While former President Donald Trump has not issued an endorsement in the race in NY23 between Nick Langworthy and Carl Paladino, his presence looms large in the rhetoric and two local political analysts for WBEN are taking note.

Ken Kruly with politicsandstuff.com says both candidates are trying to show their connections to Trump to get voters to cast ballots for them.

"I think the at the moment it's somewhat of a wash because there isn't an official endorsement if, if there does come one, that would certainly change the direction of the campaign," says Kruly.

Kruly says Trump matters, because voters will be attracted to those most committed to the former president and his style. Kruly says for most, Paladino reflects Trump's style of disrupting the system. He adds the race could change if an endorsement for Langworthy comes.

"If for some reason, Langworthy ends up with the Trump endorsement, I think that would be very significant for him, and it certainly would make the ratio a whole lot more competitive," notes Kruly.

Carl Calabrese says NY23 is Trump country.

"There are 20 towns in Erie County that make up this district. Donald Trump won 17 alone with 52% of the vote. In the remaining six counties outside of Erie County. Donald Trump swept them all with 62% of the vote," says Calabrese of the 2020 election.

Calabrese adds Paladino is the local version of Trump.

"Now you have the ability to send a Donald Trump-like candidate to Congress. I would think that's his campaign that he's communicating again," notes Calabrese.

Calabrese says Trump's record of endorsing candidates is impressive, with 90% of those receiving that endorsement winning. But he's not surprised Trump hasn't made an endorsement here.

"He's been allies with both men," explains Calabrese, noting Trump likes those who are loyal to him.

The primary is on Tuesday.
