Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - For the second time in the past six months, Buffalo firefighters were called to a multiple alarm fire at the historic St. Ann's Church - an East Side landmark.

Just after 2 p.m. Friday, firefighters responded to a working fire in the rear of the church, says Buffalo Fire Commissioner Daniel Pizzaro.

The fire was contained to the rear of the church. No damage was reported to the church rectory or, the church itself.

"The crews did a good job to contain the fire," Pizzaro said.

Pizzaro said out of caution, a third alarm was called.

"But, we did a good job of aggressively defending the church," Pizzaro said.

Built in 1886, the church has been closed since 2012 but remains at the center - led by local preservation groups to protect the towering landmark on Broadway.

St. Ann's school building was destroyed in a four-alarm fire this past winter.

Pizzaro said St. Ann's is "stable and sturdy."

An investigation into the fire continues and a total damage cost has yet to be determined.
