Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Three Buffalo police officers are on administrative after their involvement in a fatal shooting Thursday night in the city's University District.

E District officers responded to Minnesota Avenue at around 11 p.m. Thursday following a report of a 58-year-old man having a mental health crisis that eventually led to three people being held at knifepoint. Among those being threatened was a group of paramedics and a neighbor.

One officer attempted to de-escalate the situation with the use of his taser, but the situation escalated quickly, eventually resulting in another officer firing his gun twice, striking the man in the torso.

The man was taken to Erie County Medical Center by ambulance, where he would be pronounced dead during surgery just before midnight.

Interim police commissioner Craig Macy says the State Attorney General's Office is aware of the incident and is launching its own investigation.
