Pembroke, N.Y. (WBEN) The driver of a tour bus that crashed on the New York State Thruway in Pembroke in August, killing five people and injuring several others, has been indicted on manslaughter and homicide charges.

A grand jury indicted Bin Shao on five counts of second-degree manslaughter and five counts of criminally negligent homicide.


The crash occurred Aug. 22 and shut down the Thruway for hours.
Authorities said 54 people were aboard the bus, which was traveling to New York City from Niagara Falls.

The bus exited the roadway into the median then abruptly corrected causing the bus to overturn and roll off the I-90 on the south embankment. Multiple passengers were ejected, trapped with 5 deceased at the scene. Forty-nine passengers were taken to multiple hospitals.

Bin Shao had no signs of impairment, and the tour bus had no preliminary mechanical failure.

Shao was arrested at a business in Putnam Valley. Bail was set at $100,000.
