Batavia, N.Y. (WBEN) - The man behind the wheel of a tour bus that overturned on the New York State Thruway last August in Pembroke has pleaded guilty to five counts of criminally negligent homicide in Genesee County Court on Monday.
56-year-old Bin Shao of New York City has admitted to being distracted behind the wheel of the tour bus carrying 54 people on board on its way back to the city from Niagara Falls.
A total of five people died in the crash on Aug. 22, while many of the passengers on the tour bus were sent to local area hospitals to further treatment and evaluation.
Shao is set to be sentenced in Genesee County Court on Sept. 9, where he faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison.
The crash shut down the I-90 in both directions for several hours between the Depew and Pembroke exits.
