NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WBEN).....Strip away all the fun and activities planned this weekend for the twin cities of North Tonawanda and Tonawanda and it is really about business development.
Three events, planned for Aug. 15 and Aug. 16, will bring in large crowds but the end game is to really boost business in both cities.
"Working together, we can accomplish so much more," said William Strassburg, City of Tonawanda mayor.
Collaboration - not competition - is the key, Strassburg said.
"The idea is to bring more special events to both cities and help introduce our businesses to new customers," Strassburg said.
This weekend will see the third annual "Arts & Eats" promotion along Webster Street where restaurants will be offering $5 tastings.
Also planned is an arts and culture series of presentations from Carnegie Art Spree and, at Gateway Harbor on Aug. 15, the Albany Symphony will play its "Water Music NY" piece that will be followed by a drone show over the Erie Canal.
"It is a trifecta of events," said Austin Tylec, North Tonawanda mayor.
Both Tylec and Strassburg are predicting large crowds - and they are not complaining.
"Each is its own unique experience," said Rachel DeDomenico, event organizer. "Each year, we try and make it more interesting."
Tylec said special events , like what's planned for this weekend, need to be collaborative to help the business district in both cities.
"We have to find ways to collaborate and help each other," Tylec said. "Neither one of us are strangers to holding big events but it works better if we work together."
