Eight officers were taken to outside hospitals

Collins Correctional Facility

File

Brayton J. Wilson - WBEN

Collins, NY (WBEN) The state's correction officers union, NYSCOPBA, says 8 guards were attacked by inmates in two separate incidents earlier this month at Collins Correctional Facility

The first happened May 2nd when a guard found an inmate on the floor of their cell, intoxicated and screaming. The inmate was put in handcuffs and placed on a stretcher before kicking and grabbing at two officers. One of the officers began feeling lightheaded and had trouble breathing after the struggle

The second attack happened May 5th The union says an inmate refused to go back to his cell after a check found it to be non-compliant with the prison's rules The inmate then punched one officer in the mouth before being restrained by three guards The struggle continued when a guard was put in a headlock by the prisoner

Six officers had to be treated at outside hospitals after that attack

Kenny Gold, Vice President of the Union's western region, says “Eight officers requiring hospital treatment for injuries sustained at the hands of inmates is completely unacceptable, yet increasingly common,”
