Two killed in wrong-way accident on Interstate 86

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - New York State Police has announced a wrong-way driver is responsible for a crash around 6 p.m. EST Saturday evening that killed two people on Interstate 86 in the Town of Ellicott.

The wrong-way driver and one person in the other car died. A third person is in the hospital with serious injuries.


Here is the official press release from the State Police:

"On Jan. 28, 2023 at approximately 6 p.m. EST, Troopers out SP Jamestown responded to I-86, Westbound lane between exits 12 and 13 in the Town of Ellicott for a vehicle collision. Preliminary investigation determined a vehicle traveling Eastbound (wrong-way) in the Westbound lane struck another vehicle traveling Westbound. The wrong-way operator was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other two occupants of the other involved vehicle were transported to the hospital for serious injuries. One of the hospitalized occupants was pronounced deceased at the hospital from injuries."

State Police says this is still an ongoing investigation. More information will be available as the investigation continues.
