Unusual track of two storms could bring first snow to WNY

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN/AccuWeather) - The Halloween 'trick' may come from Mother Nature late this week as an unusual combination of a winter storm in the western rockies and a tropical storm named Zeta combine to track cold air and possibly some early season snow to the region Friday.

"The setup for the Northeast will involve a fresh injection of cold air as high pressure will build eastward from the Great Lakes region spanning Thursday and Friday," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Mike Doll said.

The storm will start off as rain spreading over the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic on Thursday and ultimately reaching New England Thursday night.

During Thursday night to Friday, as colder air is drawn in, rain is likely to become mixed with wet snow over the mountains of western and northern Pennsylvania and portions of the southern tier of New York state.

"Snow could be seen even at some of the valley locations in western and central Pennsylvania, the southern tier of New York state and interior western New England as well, should enough cold air be drawn in," Doll said.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo is watching the storms and expects snow to accumulate across the southern tier portion of the region.

"Accumulations are certainly possible for the higher terrain, perhaps on the order of several inches. It`s also not out of the question that a minor accumulation could occur at lower elevations, but that is far from certain at this point," say NOAA forecasters.
