Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - More parishes within the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo are getting a clearer picture of the amount of money they will need to allocate to the Diocese for the $150 million clergy abuse settlement.
Late Friday, WBEN learned the amounts expected from four additional parishes:
- St. Amelia: $1,516,305
- St. Christopher: $1,392,953
- St. Jude the Apostle: $508,865
- Our Lady of Czestochowa: $64,884
- St. Francis: $44,592
Earlier this week, WBEN learned that St. Benedict's allocation would be $1.98 million, while St. Leo's is at $17,000.
In addition, Nandor Forgach, a parishioner at St. Benedict’s Church, has been critical of the settlement process, telling WBEN that Msgr. Robert Zapfel, who has served as Pastor of St. Leo’s Church, reacted to the backlash over invoice amounts.
Zapfel said Mass Friday morning at St Benedict’s. At the end of mass, he addressed being called out in a radio interview on WBEN, saying he was disappointed and felt a need to defend himself. He said he would never treat parishes differently.
Zapfel was part of a group that helped determine the settlement formula, but didn’t know how much each parish would have to contribute until after parishes were notified.
The Buffalo Catholic Diocese is preparing to discuss the settlement invoices with the media next week.
