Buffalo Police say the vehicle was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed at apprximately 7:30am when it crashed through marble bollards and landed at the base of the monument. The vehicle's engine careened across the monument and came to rest on the opposite side of the square.

"This is a first," said Buffalo Police Captain Jeffrey Rinald as he stood in the square after surveying the scene.

Police do have video surveillance of the incident but are seeking the public's assistance if the vehicle was seen prior to the incident. "We're asking for the public to notify our confidential tipline at 847 2255," said Rinaldo.

Rinaldo says police officers saw the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and when they entered their vehicle they saw the smoke coming from the square and were on scene almost instantly at 7:28am.

Our team's going to be out here many hours," said Rinaldo.
