With a thunderous boom Wednesday shortly after noon, the final tower at the southern end of the once monstrous structure came tumbling down with a handful of onlookers on Ganson Street witnessing history.

The final demolition ends a lengthy demolition process that was preceded by a controversial debate over the historic meaning of the building to Buffalo and its historic standing.

"I've been coming down everyday since September 16th, Larry Mruk of Explore Buffalo told WBEN as he stood and watched the final piece of the historic structure come down. "This has been a passion for me."

The Great Northern was one of Mruk's favorite buildings in Buffalo, but he realized it had no value at the end of its life and needed to come down. "It was time," he said.
