Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The most notable aspects of New Year's Eve all defy the strict guidance we're all living with amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Parties. Restaurants. Bars. Ball drops.
With continued warnings from medical experts to isolate and avoid large gatherings, First Night Buffalo organizers have been busy planning a virtual event for families for New Year's Eve and a virtual ball drop to cap it all off when 2020 finally comes to an end and we ring in the new year.
While the crowds won't be in downtown Buffalo for First Night events, the fun is still available by way of extensive pre-planning by First Night organizers. "We're really excited about what we have in store," said Carrie Meyer, Executive Director of the Independent Health Foundation, which is supporting the virtual events.
2020 is the 32nd annual First Night event and would normally attract a crowd of thousands. Organizers say the virtual event will provide families a fun way to celebrate New Year's Eve safely in their own homes. Families will be able to enjoy many of the festivities of years' past, along with entertaining new features, all from the confines of their own home.
For those looking to make it official, organizers are encouraging virtual participants to pick up a First Night Party pack at participating Tops Markets. Party Packs were made available for $20 at 15 participating Tops Friendly Markets' Customer Service Desks.
Meyer tells WBEN the party packs help in creating the First Night atmosphere and says they include "Everything that you need to have a great time with your family and children."
Virtual First Night Events begin at 5pm and include informative shows and entertainers. A complete rundown of the activities is available here.
As New Year's Eve wears on, attention always turns to the brightly lit and colorful ball that makes a slow descent from the Electric Tower downtown. The ball drop will happen and only be available virtually this year.
Mayor Byron Brown says there will be road closures in the vicinity of the ball drop to ensure the event is safe for organizers. The ball drop will be televised LIVE on WKBW Channel 7.
"The New Year's Eve Ball Drop is one of the City's most cherished holiday traditions. I thank the many partners for working with my Administration to keep it going by adding a safe, virtual element as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 emergency. While the celebration is virtual, the spirit of the night remains the same: celebrating safely and responsibly. Please stay home and ring in 2021 with the members of your household so we can continue to protect our community."
Washington Street between Genesee and East Huron will be closed to the public beginning at 5pm. At 8pm, Main Street from Chippewa to Mohawk, Washington Street from Chippewa to Mohawk, Genesee from E. Huron to Ellicott, W. Huron from Pearl to Main and E. Huron from Main to Ellicott will also be closed to the public. These closures will be in effect until Friday, January 1st, 2021 at 2am.
