Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Wednesday marks the annual Turkeys for Tickets event across Western New York. While you turn in your turkeys for a pair of Buffalo Sabres tickets, where do your donated turkeys go?

Catherine Shick of FeedMore says this comes at an important time.

"It is so critical for the community if they're in a position where they're able to give, to give back and support drives like this," said Shick in an interview with WBEN. "We know that the need for food assistance increases during the holiday season, and this year, with the government shutdown, with the disruption that took place with SNAP benefits, we know that the need is even greater."

She says dropping off that frozen turkey at turkeys for tickets can ensure that a family in need has a hearty meal come Thanksgiving and the holiday season.

Last year, FeedMore received 2,274 turkeys from this drive.

"Frozen turkeys are a hard item to come by, and it is something that is in very high demand by so many of our community members who are looking to have holiday gatherings," Shick noted.

She adds every turkey makes a difference.

The Buffalo City Mission will also receive donations from fans, who will receive a voucher, which is good for two tickets, for select Sabres home games online using a promo code. Participants will have the option to purchase additional seats at the time of redemption.

Shick says if you need food assistance, you can go online or call 716-822-2002, and you'll be connected to resources that will fit your needs.
