Outdoor workers struggle with high heat

"It can be quite a challenging day out there" - Dave Grosskopf, President of the National Association of Letter Carriers

A U.S. judge on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020, blocked controversial Postal Service changes that have slowed mail nationwide. The judge called them "a politically motivated attack on the efficiency of the Postal Service" before the November election.

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - This week has been a big challenge for anyone working outside.

While some job sites have adjusted for the heat, other workers have no other option than to go about their regular day while the heat index breaks 100 degrees.

"It can be quite a challenging day out there."

Dave Grosskopf, President of the National Association of Letter Carriers in Buffalo, said that while Postal Workers are allowed to take some extra breaks in the heat, it can still be tough to keep it moving. He told WBEN that staying hydrated is the biggest piece of advice he stresses upon other letter carriers.

He told us even the long winters aren't quite as challenging as the extreme heat.

"I'm a typical Western New Yorker, I'm a polar bear," Grosskopf said. "I would rather be out there in a foot of snow and 15 degree temperatures as opposed to what we're dealing with this week."

There are ways you can help out anyone doing work outside.

"A frozen water bottle goes a long way. If you see somebody out there working, even if they don't look like they need it, offer them a frozen water bottle. It keeps us going, and the good will lifts your spirits."
