
If you woke up to an email from Burger King about an order you apparently placed in your sleep, you aren't alone. But is it a "Whopper" of a mistake or a marketing tactic?
"Thousands" of blank order receipts were sent from an official Burger King email account overnight Monday into Tuesday morning to people across the globe, according to multiple reports.
A message with the blank receipt says: "Thank you for ordering from Burger King! Your order will be ready to be picked up at Burger King located at." The order information is completely blank.
The emails were sent from a legitimate source: Burger King's main promotional marketing email address.
People who received the email flooded Twitter with confusion. Some said they use the BK app or have ordered food online, but others claim they don't even eat Burger King and have never shared their email address with the company.
Many wondered if their email accounts had been hacked or if Burger King was the target of a data breach. Some even questioned if this was perhaps a marketing ploy.
A representative for Burger King told The Verge that "an internal processing error" was responsible for the mass email. The rep didn't provide any other details.
It does not appear that anyone who received the email was charged or had any of their information compromised.
