Gen Z would rather be an influencer than a doctor: study

A new study has revealed the most sought-after jobs for Generation Z -- and let's just say traditional titles aren't exactly their favorite cup of tea.

The study by Class Central, a search engine for online courses, found that out of all the careers, members of Gen Z -- ages 12 to 27 -- would rather be an influencer, artist or model than a teacher, doctor or lawyer.

"This study demonstrates that Gen Z is drawn toward the more creative industries, especially ones that have become heavily intertwined with social media, such as blogging and influencing," Dhawal Shah, CEO of Class Central, said in a statement.

To determine the rankings, researchers analyzed the volume of career-related hashtags on Instagram, such as #Modellife, #Doctor and #Influencer, and ranked the careers by the number of Instagram posts.

The study revealed that model is the most sought-after job for Gen Z, with over 385 million Instagram posts.

Artist is the second-most sought-after job, with a total of over 345 million career-related hashtags. That's followed by photographer in third place with over 268 million posts, makeup artist taking the fourth spot with over 149 million posts, and blogger as the fifth most-popular job with 127 million posts.

Marketing is named the sixth-most sought-after job with over 86 million Instagram posts. Next up in seventh place is singer with over 70 million posts, followed by personal trainer as eighth-most sought-after job with over 58 million posts.

The ninth-most desirable job for Gen Zers is actor, with a total of 52 million career-related posts on Instagram. Finishing as the tenth-most popular job is influencer, with over 50 million posts.

Other high-ranking jobs include writer, YouTuber and fashion designer.

"It's fascinating to see how social media has impacted career paths of younger generations and whether more traditional job roles will gravitate lower down the ranking in the future," Shah said.

Interestingly, the study reveals that more traditional jobs, such as doctor and lawyer, appear further down the ranking, with doctor coming in at 25th place and lawyer appearing in 34th place.

"While Gen Zers have earned a reputation for wanting solely to be influencers and YouTubers, this study shows that the younger generation is still drawn toward jobs that require practical skills. For example, jobs such as streamer and footballer appear beneath careers such as architect and chef," Shah noted.
